About the Boat Sweetwater sailing is the only sailing charter in Saugatuck on a classic yacht. Meteor is an early (1963) fiberglass sloop with wood trim - a 38 foot Pearson Invicta ocean racer. Sailboats were once made solely of wood. The Invicta was the first sailboat produced with a fiberglass hull to win a major ocean race - the 1965 Newport to Burmuda (first in its class and first overall) - thus permanently influencing the course of sailboat design. Meteor is one of only 21 Invictas ever produced by Pearson. The hull is number 16 and this is why you will see "16" on the sail. Bill Tripp designed Meteor with a 4.5 foot draft and a centerboard that drops to 9 feet. Captain Mort Van Howe has carefully preserved the original boat while updating the interior for cruising (traveling and living aboard). If you have ever dreamed of skimming the waves on a classic racing yacht - or piloting one - a Meteor charter is your opportunity to experience a rare and beautiful boat. |
